Who is a web designer?
July 19, 2006
By definition a Web Designer is a person who creates web sites.
Web designers may use Web Authoring software such as Microsoft Frontpage or Dreamweaver or an HTML editor to create the actual pages, or they may design the overall look and let a Web master do the actual coding. Some designers use a plain text editor to craft websites. Most often, they are also proficient with Web graphics and images.
Web browser standards are not yet fully harmonized. A website that looks great in Internet Explorer might look horrible in a Mozilla based browser like Firefox or Netscape. Additionally, with the proliferation of hand held devices for browsing the Internet, compliance with W3C standards is becoming more and more critical. Your designer must be conversant with the intricacies of cross-browser design — designing for one browser (IE) is no longer ideal, as the Google backed FireFox is eating up Microsoft’s browser turf at an alarming rate.
Someone who can whip up a web page in FrontPage without the knowledge of HTML will not be able detect and correct the messy code that Frontpage generates underneath the page, some of which is proprietary to Microsoft—consequently a website that look glorious in Microsoft Internet Explorer may look and load terribly in Opera and/or some other browser. Therefore when choosing a designer to build your website it’s essential that that you check their credentials carefully.

What is Link Popularity and how does it affect your website?
July 18, 2006
Link popularity is defined as a measure of the quantity and quality of sites that link to your site. Search engines use link popularity as part of their ranking criterion. Google especially, lays stress on Link Popularity. The big three search engines namely Google, Yahoo and MSN rely on their own proprietary algorithms to determine Link Popularity per site.
Google uses it’s Page Rank algorithm to rank incoming links to a site. Further information on the original algorithm can be found at The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine.
Webmasters should check their Link Popularity often to aid them in their marketing and search strategies. Here is a very popular Link Popularity Check Tool.
Here are some strategies you should deploy to increase your link popularity:
1. Try to get as many one-way inbound links as you can. Direct reciprocal linking does not count as much as one way inbound links. Link Baiting is an excellent strategy to utilize in this instance.
2. List your site in major directories such as Yahoo! and ODP (Open Directory Project)
3. Internal Linking: Link to your internal pages with appropriate keywords so as to enable search engines to spider deep into your site and to determine the popularity of your internal pages

With windows enjoying a far superior market share in the desktop market, RSS has the potential for broader reach and to more deeply integrate the information it delivers across applications of various kinds.
Microsoft is building support into Windows Vista to enable application developers to integrate RSS into their applications and create amazing experiences for their users. For more information go here .
Webmasters who are not offering RSS on their websites right now risk being left behind.
With RSS users can read your content right on their desktops. Additionally webmasters can tap into into a large volume of free content available on the internet.
Syndication of free content is usually accomplished by a webmaster placing a simple snippet of Javascript on their websites to display content.
Unfortunately Search Engines do not read Javascript at all therefore the SEO benefits are pretty limited.
In order to gain any SEO benefits a webmaster needs code that parses the RSS feed and renders the feed as html. An RSS Parser like CaRP converts RSS to HTML, customized to fit your website, and integrates it into your webpages automatically.
