Alexander was born in Manchester, Connecticut on November 22, 1974. Raised in Boston, he studied American history and international relations in Hartford and Chicago, where he founded, edited, and wrote for alternative student newspapers. In 1997 he moved to Prague, Czech Republic, where he researched for the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, freelanced, and in 2001 founded The Prague Pill a bi-weekly newspaper.

In 2003 he returned to the U.S. to join the editorial board of New York Press, a once-great weekly in Manhattan. He left the paper in summer of 2005 to travel and write from South Asia. He returned to the U.S. a year later and is currently based in Washington, D.C. He can be reached at zaitchik[at]gmail[dot]com .
