Here’s Advertising 101 for you to refresh what you know about the world of promotions and marketing.

The commercial industry is all about getting the profits and ROI. It’s all about investing what you have to make more money.

For one to succeed, business owners must build their own database of not only satisfied, but pleased customers. In order to do that, you need advertising to help you attract customers to your business, and eventually purchase your products and services.

Advertising, if you may recall, is the activity that helps you attract public attention to your product or business via paid announcements in print, broadcast or electronic media. (http://www.answers.com/topic/advertising?cat=biz-fin) The goal of advertising then is to influence the public’s behavior and thinking process in favor of the business entity.

Advertising is a marketing tool, hence, it is a program that can complement other promotional tools such as print catalogs and flyers, postcard printing pieces, business card printing, etc.

Since the beginning of time, advertising has taken many forms to foster an informative and responsible public. From painted walls to the innovative techniques of spreading out the word, advertising has evolved into a force that influences every aspect of society today.

Forms of Advertising

Advertising is known as advocacy advertising, comparative, cooperative, direct- mail, informational, institutional, outdoor, product, specialized, point-of-purchase, and reminder advertising.

In direct-mail, this is where your promotional print collaterals come in. Ads from catalogs, flyers, postcards, and business cards are just some of the widely used tools to promote your business. Direct mail advertising is so popular because you are able to send your message in detail, personalized, fast, and to a select group or individual.

So how do you benefit from advertising?

Advertising can do lots of things to help you grow your business. For one thing, advertising helps you to remind your clients and new prospects of the benefits of getting into business with you. It gives information to your clients how your products and services can make life better for them.

Second, advertising allows your organization to build and maintain a unique identity which can be easily recognized in all your promotional products. Hence, it also lets you have a reputation that is acceptable to the public’s eye.

Third, advertising can help you to attract new clients, as well as encourage and build loyalty from the old ones. Because of the relationship that was made through advertising, you are able to convince your existing clients to buy more of what you sell. This obviously, is what helps you increase your sales and boost your profits, which is the bottom line in every business.

But while advertising seems to be the miracle worker for most businesses, it does have flaws and limitations. One of which is its inability to focus on the specific needs of an individual client. It also does not provide comprehensive information about your products and services. And advertising is definitely not cost effective for most small businesses.

Nevertheless, despite the negatives, advertising does have the power to grow your business. It may not solve all your problems, but it can surely help you increase sales which eventually add up to more profits.
