Virtual credit card numbers are quickly beginning to catch on, and more consumers are seeing the benefits of using single-use credit card numbers which offer both security and protection when you are making purchases online. Virtual credit card numbers are similar in use to the disposable camera, because with both you have a means to protect another product from damage or theft.

Today, it is much more common to hear about instances of credit and debit card fraud, as well as identity theft, than it was only a few years ago.

Concerned consumers and credit card companies are trying to find methods of dealing with the risks of safeguarding the consumers credit and personal information while also letting people enjoy the convenience of using their cards for their purchases at local retailers and online alike.

Perhaps, one of best solutions to this problem so far, is the creation of these virtual credit card numbers.

By using virtual credit card numbers, you have the opportunity to make purchases on the web anytime, night or day; they are temporary numbers which can be used once to allow you to complete transactions while no giving merchants your real card number. Sometimes, the card number may be valid for multiple purchases within a set time limit; this period of time allows you plenty of opportunity to use the number before it becomes inactive.

The intended purpose of a virtual credit card number, is to protect your real number from those who would make fraudulent use of the card and do damage to your credit. For the computer criminal who penetrates secure credit card processing centers to steal card information, the virtual number can make all the difference in protecting your credit, because if they try to use them, they will come up with nothing.

While it is possible to find places where your card information is perfectly safe and that it is secure during transactions, another point must be made; it could be that the merchants who own the site are behaving unscrupulously and selling your information to the highest bidder.

Larger and legitimate retailers are not exempt from dishonest practices, even those that pride themselves on providing secure credit card processing systems that supposedly keep your information completely safe, those who wish to profit from the unlawful sale of personal credit card information will find ways to do so.

Virtual credit card numbers are a great source of additional security, and hackers and other criminals will not be able to make use of the numbers to make additional purchases online because the invalid numbers will no longer work. Now those consumers who do most of their shopping online, can now breathe a sigh of relief at the simplicity and effectiveness of this ingenious security measure and there is no reason to fear identity theft or fraud when you can use a virtual credit card number.

The virtual credit card does offer a huge measure of security and safety for all consumers who choose to use this option to make any type of online purchase.
