Somali Canadian Diaspora Alliance: end the Mogadishu Humanitarian Crisis!

Incredible atrocities are being perpetrated by the rancorous Abyssinian dictator Meles Zenawi's soldiers these days in the South of Somalia where the heroic resistance to the Abyssinian occupying forces took the form of generalized rebellion, sending back to Gonder and Makele a great number of coffins – all due to the demented policies of the racist tyrant Zenawi.

In an effort to deprive the brave Mogadishu fighters from inexorable reserves taken among the Somali youth, the Abyssinian army and their few Somali collaborators (the so-called Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and their affiliates) attempted to force the Mogadishu population to flee.

After 11 months of Abyssinian occupation, and the inhuman and deeply discriminatory, anti-Somali policies implemented by the Tigray Abyssinian dictator Zenawi's army, the destroyed infrastructure does not allow for timely delivery of Humanitarian aid. This is what 40 international NGOs involved in the area of Mogadishu clarified in a statement released on October 30th.

With the panic that was deliberately generated by the authorities imposed by the Abyssinian army, the Mayor of Mogadishu city Mohamed Habeeb and the Chief of the Police Abdi Qaybdiid, ca. 70000 people left Mogadishu over the past week, whereas the internally displaced seem to amount to approximately 17000 people.

To prevent the worse and rectify earlier errors and misjudgments, the UN and the US must intervene immediately, and opt for a political solution that would put an end to the main factor of evildoing in Somalia: the occupying Abyssinian forces. To avoid the radicalization of the National Liberation fighters and to demonstrate a real commitment to Somalia's integrity, the International Community must take action immediately.

This is precisely what the Somali Canadian Diaspora Alliance demands in a Press Release issued today. Member of the greater Somali Diaspora Network, the SCDA is a grassroots organization committed to the termination of the disastrous Abyssinian occupation of the Somali South.

With their devotion to the Somali National Cause, the Somali Diaspora bears to the four corners of the world the Message of a Peaceful and Prosper Somalia, which is the wish of the totality of the Somalis allover the world. In this article, we publish the Somali Canadian Diaspora Alliance Press Release integrally.

Humanitarian Catastrophe in Somalia

The Somali Canadian Diaspora Alliance calls for the attention of the International Community to respond to the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Somalia.

The scale and magnitude of this deliberate uprooting and displacement of people as well as the pace this man made catastrophe is taking place has all the marking of unprecedented humanitarian disaster in the making, yet the International Community is silent to respond to such humanitarian catastrophe.

Since the illegal Ethiopian occupation took place on December 25, 2007 close to a Million people were uprooted from Mogadishu alone and displaced on the outskirts of Mogadishu without food and shelter, the wounded were forcibly abducted from hospitals and accused of being Union of Islamic Courts sympathizers thus depriving them from getting needed medical treatment.

The Ethiopians and the TFG militia have prevented humanitarian aid from reaching those internally displaced people, an act of war crimes as indicated in the Geneva Convention.

In its latest report on November 2, 2007 the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimated that nearly 90,000 Mogadishu residents fled during the past weekend following the most intense fighting in months.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and local partners indicate that a huge wave of more than 70,000 people left the capital in the three–day period between 27 to 29 October, while some 17,000 are estimated to be displaced within the city.

The Mayor of Mogadishu city Mr. Mohamed Habeeb and the Chief of the Police Mr. Abdi Qaybdiid have deliberately forced people to flee from Mogadishu after they made announcement on a local radio station urging Mogadishu residents to flee the city or be killed. The international community has moral responsibility to decisively respond to this humanitarian crises and to investigate atrocities committed by the Ethiopians and the TFG Militia.

On October 30, 2007, 40 international NGOs released statement warning about the unfolding Humanitarian catastrophe in Somalia and urging the International Community to respond to this man made calamity. They stated that "There is an unfolding humanitarian catastrophe in South Central Somalia. Tens of thousands of people are currently fleeing violence in Mogadishu adding to the up to 335,000 people already needing immediate lifesaving assistance in Mogadishu and the Shabelle regions".

They further stated that "International and National NGOs cannot respond effectively to the crisis because access and security are deteriorating dramatically at a time when needs are increasing" and urged the international community to act now before it becomes too late. They also stated that "The international community and all parties to the present conflict have a responsibility to protect civilians, to allow the delivery of aid and to respect humanitarian space and the safety of humanitarian workers".

The Somali Canadian Diaspora Alliance calls on the International Community to do the following:

1. A comprehensive humanitarian aid immediately delivered to the displaced people

2. Pressure Ethiopian and TFG militia to immediately stop shelling civilian neighbourhoods in the city of Mogadishu

3. Investigate war crimes for the atrocities committed against civilians

4. The international Community demand the immediate Ethiopian withdrawal, as their presence will only perpetuate the conflict.

The Somali Canadian Diaspora Alliance also urges the USA to act promptly and help de-escalate the situation:

1. In the interest of achieving durable peace in Somalia, alter its foreign policy on the Horn

2. Pressure Ethiopia to withdraw its troops from Somalia

3. Promote a holistic and comprehensive peace-building approach to the conflict that is based on a genuine reconciliation between the conflicting parties, by pressuring the TFG to reconcile with the Somali Re-liberation Alliance, as the TFG cannot function and will never get the obedience of its own people without a genuine reconciliation.

Somali Canadian Diaspora Alliance is a grassroots organization committed in ending the U.S. funded Ethiopian occupation of Somalia, and a member of the greater Somali Diaspora Network.
