If you are a professional business and have commissioned your website from a professional website design company, your site is probably your pride and joy and displaying your company to its best advantage.

However, you migh nott be getting quite the reponse that you wanted – maybe your site is not performing that well in the search engines?

Here are a couple of things that you can check about your site that might give an suggestion of why it is not doing so well.

Firstly, you might want to check whether Google has indexed your whole website. You do know that little programs called search engine spiders examine your site and indexes all the pages in its main database? You need to ascertain that Google have read all the pages of your site, else your site will never do well.

To check this, type in the following search into Google:

Site:your-site-url

Where 'your-site-url' is replaced by your actual domain name.

You can make sure that Google has made a record of all the pages of your site. If nothing is returned or only one page, then you have a problem!

The next thing to check is the Page Rank of your site. Page Rank is an indication of how significant Google thinks your site is. Page Rank starts at 0 and ends at 10, with 0 being the lowest and 10 being the most important, but normally you do not need to be worried if your site's Page Rank is around 3 or 4 – this is normally good enough for a site to do well in the search engines. To check your Page Rank, you can type in a search into Google for 'check Page Rank online' and use any of the tools returned. Type in your website url and your Page Rank will be shown.

Your Page Rank might be low because you have few links coming in to your website. You can check these links by using Yahoo. Why Yahoo? Surely we are concerned with how many links Google is counting? That is true; however, Google does not publish the true amount of links coming in to your site. Go to yahoo.com and do a search:

Link:your-site-url,

where once again, you replace 'your-site-url' with the actual url of your domain name.

This will give you the number of links coming in to your website. If this number is low, for example, below 100, then you might want to think of getting a couple of links back to your website. You can do this by writing some good articles and publishing them in good article directories, or by submitting your site to some good, high quality web directories, or by contacting webmasters of blogs and requesting them if you can make a blog post to their blog. This blog post must contain a link back to your website. Most webmasters are constantly looking for fresh content and will be happy to oblige.
