Keeping Your Credit Solid with No Balance Transfer Fee

In your lifetime, will you want to rent an apartment, buy a house, or get a loan from a bank? If you are like the majority of this country's residents, the answer to most of those questions is "yes." In order to do any and all of those things, you will need to have good credit. Credit doesn't grow on trees or fall down from the sky, it is something you must earn for yourself based on your fiscal spending and responsibility. One primary means of building your credit is the use of a credit card. A credit card is not a one-size-fits-all service and most people don't just get one card that fits their desires for the rest of their life. As the market changes, the advantages of different cards also change, which is why it is so important to be aware of what is happening out there in the big bad world of finances.

Building credit productively depends on the use of your credit card, which means that the card you pick for yourself needs to be one with which you will be happy. Don't be at all hesitant to shop around for a card. Start by making a list of everything you would want in a credit card and everything you want to avoid. Then prioritize those- what are the deal-breakers for you, and what would you be willing to live without? Knowing what you want from a card makes it far more likely that you'll walk away happy with the choice you've made. It is easy to get suckered into deals that sound really wonderful, such as offers of 0% balance transfers, but first stop and ask yourself the next logical question, which is: "Do I actually want to do a credit card balance transfer?" If the answer is no, then a card that claims to have no balance transfer isn't actually a good deal for you.

Don't be afraid to ask questions of the companies you are considering, and always read the fine print. Make sure that you understand all the fee schedules and grace periods for the card; many cards have fairly high late fees, and you'd hate to find that out the hard way. When you know what is really being offered, you are less likely to feel taken advantage of in the end. Many people look for a card based on travel deals and other such rewards. Take a close look at such offers and make sure you're not being taken for a ride. If so, you will end up paying more in interest or fees than you will actually see out of bonus points or airline tickets; it's just not worth your while.

Something that many people miss out on is the importance of the way you treat your credit card. You should endeavor to always pay the full amount of your balance when possible, and make payments that are higher than the minimum when this is not possible. The reason for this is that the longer it takes you to pay off a purchase, the more interest you'll pay and the greater the total amount you'll spend. This is great for the credit card companies (they'd like as much of your money as possible), but it does not facilitate your building credit if you can't afford to make any new purchases because you are years from being able to pay off your existing debt.
