You can live somewhere in the hills of Wyoming with the nearest store 5 miles away and you can still advertise to the world, order and deliver goods, and send and receive payments as if you were running a major factory.

If your business depends on actually manufacturing or handling hard goods, you would need a factory or warehouse space and the associated staff. This business couldn't be limited to your home.

However, you can accomplish the same thing by contracting with companies that provide these services. Basically, you can do anything that doesn't require you directly handling hard goods or providing some service that couldn't be hosted in your home.

For example, you can sell hard goods by drop shipping. According to Wikipedia drop shipping is a supply chain management technique in which the retailer does not keep goods in stock, but instead transfers customer orders and shipment details to either the manufacturer or a wholesaler, who then ships the goods directly to the customer. As in all retail businesses, the retailers make their profit on the difference between the wholesale and retail price.

You can basically accomplish the almost the same thing as shipping your own goods by advertising the product through your website and taking care of the payments for the orders while the supplier is responsible to get the order fulfilled. All you'll have to do is take orders.

All you'll need to get started is a basic website with some ads and some software to accept payments. However, in the case drop shipping, there are certain problems. Chris Bernard discusses the issues of buying power and market devaluation in detail.

What You Need Most

The things you really need are:

the right information - a plan and a method for finding what to sell, how to sell it and where to sell it

determination - a don't give up attitude. There may be ups and downs but those that keep at it win in the end

the ability to stick to it - be ready to steadily do what needs to be done. It is not all that hard but you've got to keep at it

a customer centric attitude - thinking in terms of what your customer would want and looking out for their benefit

a basic knowledge of marketing - knowing how to advertise and convert the people you reach into customers

You don't necessarily need a full fledged website. You can get by without knowing geeky stuff like HTML and a detailed knowledge of SEO (search engine optimization). You can do quite well with some basic tricks and strategies.

You will need a hosting site and an ability to write articles or outsource the writing of articles would be very useful but not strictly necessary.

There is one thing you should watch out for. There is a veritable flood of information and money making schemes out there with tons of videos and documents. Much of the information is quite good but You can spend your life reading and never doing. You need to find the right system and stick to it.

Monetization Models

Home based internet marketing is especially suited for:

Affiliate sales - getting a commission for getting products sold or getting a lead by your marketing efforts

Ebay or auction sales - offering items for sale on Ebay or other auctions sites. You need a source for the items but don't need to actually have them

Adsense - put Google ads (or other company ads) on your site and get paid anytime someone clicks on one of the ads

Webmaster - build websites for customers

selling ebooks - sell electronic books that you have written or purchased the rights to

selling your own software - sell software that you created or had written

Internet marketing can also be used to enhance your traditional business. You publicize the goods or services that you offer to get more customers to your place of business.

You can live the lifestyle you want to and very often achieve a great deal of wealth. It is ideal for WAHMs (work at home Moms) and anyone that wants to be the master of their own destiny.
