An unemployed worker can file for benefits through Employment Development Department which he could use in efforts to find a new job. It can also aid workers to provide for their daily needs while still looking for their next job.

Unemployment Insurance

Employers are required by law to pay for unemployment insurance so that employees are taken cared of whenever they are terminated or their working hours have been reduced. This will help them get back to finding another employment.

However, not all claimants are approved. There are some whose applications are rejected for some technicalities or misunderstanding.

To know whether or not you are qualified to receive unemployment insurance benefits, here are the qualifications to receive employment insurance benefits:

• Applicant must be partially or totally unemployed.

• They are physically fit to work

• Have earned enough amount of salary while working for last employer.

• The employee has not committed any fault that led to the termination / reduction of working hours.

• Willing to accept immediate job

• Be eligible each week for benefits that would be collected.

• Actively Searching for a Job

It is crucial that claims be applied immediately so that the process of your claims can be started as there is a one-week waiting period that is unpaid. Claims would start on the Sunday before the date of the application.

What You Need

Aside from the above factors that could grant your benefit, there are other questions that need to be answered and requirements that should be filed in order to proceed. Here are the common pieces of information needed to process your claims:

• Reason for termination / reduction of working hours.

• Employee’s name, contact number, address, date of birth, and the social security number.

• Employer’s name, contact number, address, and the last day of employment.

• State-issued identification number.

• Citizenship / Alien registration number.

• Employment records within the last 18 months.

Failure to produce any of these requirements can prevent you from getting insurance benefits. Also, withholding or giving false statements regarding the above pieces of information can result to suspension of your benefits.

Hence, it is important to present only true and correct statements regarding the information being asked for by the EDD. Consequence of any false representation can also lead to paying fine or even imprisonment.

How to File for Benefits

Claimants may apply through the internet, mail, fax, or through the phone.
