Up to 25 percent of all children experience the embarrassing annoyance of facial tics. This problem can best be explained as a repeatedly occurring spasm that affects both facial and eye muscles. The exact etiology is often unknown, but research indicates a significant connection between stressful events and an increase in the evidence of symptoms.

Another possible cause of tics is a lack of essential vitamins or minerals, like magnesium. Some types of facial tics are manifestations of nervous system disorders, such as Tourette syndrome, a disorder caused by a dysfunction of the nervous system. This health condition is hypothesized to have a genetic facet as well.

Some examples of a facial tic include rapid eye movements or eye blinking, squinting, mouth or nose wrinkling, twitching, grunting, mouth twitches, facial grimacing, facial twitches, and throat clearing. This problem often begins during childhood years, and may last for only a few weeks or for several years. In some cases, the tic persists into adulthood.

Facial tics can perpetuate and exacerbate anxiety-related behaviors in a child whose stress levels are already high because of the disorder itself. Other children are often very cruel, making fun of the child’s problem. Worse, educators who do not understand and are unable to assist fellow classmates to understand and assist the child in overcoming his difficulty can have a devastating impact on a child’s self image.

The problem, however, is not limited to the afflicted youth. Adults who find themselves dealing with a facial tic encounter significant challenges in managing this problem. These people often encounter overwhelming social difficulties. In some instances, a person can learn to identify the onset and control the urge that initiates the facial tic. Even this, however, can result in intense emotional and physical energy drains. Low self-esteem is often a major issue with which these people wrestle. Often, these individuals struggle with low self-esteem.

Adults who obtain relief from the humiliating effects of facial grimaces and other tics are afforded with an opportunity for social rebirth. Their perception of themselves improves, and they no longer fear to experience life at its fullest. Children who can overcome this condition no longer are burdened by the paralyzing stress that impairs their social lives, and encounter with joy rather than emotional pain.

At times, medications, such as mildly sedating drugs, are prescribed to this condition. Although the medications may lessen the incidence of these symptoms, the drugs themselves can often cause undesired side effects. For this reason, many people have turned to alternative treatments to help them in treating their condition.

Two treatment approaches that have demonstrated exciting potential in helping people to successfully manage facial tics are hypnosis and NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming). Both of these therapies capitalize on the strengths of the individual’s subconscious to assist them manage the spasm. Since these treatments are concerned with the origin of the difficulty through intervening in the unconscious where the problem originates, they are much more useful than traditional therapy methods that just attempt to control eye blinking, mouth twitches, squinting, facial grimacing, facial twitches, grunting, or other types of impulsive behavior.

Hypnosis allows the client to achieve a restful trancelike state and receive suggestions that assist them to expel tension. Since tics are caused by suppressed anxiety within a person’s body, release of the tension allows them to successfully manage this behavior. After several sessions, the client should be able to possess the ability to manage tension successfully.

Those therapists who use NLP assist the client to channel his or her mind to use thoughts that stress them as triggers for thoughts that will relax them. In addition, the client is taught to use an unrelated part of the body, like a toe, to expel the anxiety that would have previously been expressed by the facial tic. This technique allows individuals to manage tension without resorting to the embarrassing impulse.

Another positive outcome of both these is that the client avoids the experience of adverse effects from medication type therapies. Indeed, both hypnosis and NLP are typically considered to be the ideal treatment for individuals who are afflicted by tics, such as nose wrinkling, or throat clearing, because these treatment approaches do not have undesirable side effects. This relieves significant anguish and stress for the affected person.

Summary: Facial tics are often socially destructive and can result in serious consequences. Male children are most likely to develop this difficulty, which can persist into adulthood; however female children may also have difficulties with tics. Although several treatment methods are available, hypnosis and NLP appear to be the most prudent options, because they do not result in negative side effects and are very efficacious.
