Debate with a Somali Critic and Supporter

By: Muhammad Shamsaddin Megalommatis
[][Post to BookMarks @ AfroArticles.com]

[ Posted On: 2008-07-14 ]

I have been used to disregard mails sent by uneducated, fool-mouthed, and racist Amhara and Tigray terrorists, who intentionally insult in a shameful attempt to dissuade scholars and intellectuals from diffusing the historical truth which has been peremptorily and dictatorially prohibited in Abyssinia (fallaciously re-baptized 'Ethiopia').

And I have also been used to pay no attention to mails sent by low level employees and scribes of the criminal gangster Rayale, Somaliland's Al Capone, who insult only to get their monthly pay and survive. I feel however pity for either case.

This does not mean that I dislike criticism; on the contrary, I find it helpful and refreshing. Criticism brings every author in front of a mirror, and I have been used to take constructive criticism, as I consider it as an opportunity to re-examine the validity of my arguments and the veracity of my interpretation and analysis.

It is therefore with pleasure that I noticed an article written by Mr. Mohamed A. Awale in which the author develops a fair criticism while keeping a civil attitude. In this article, I will first re-publish Mr. Mohamed A. Awale's article (entitled 'Does Dr. Megalommatis's Convoluted Argument Helps or Hurts Somali Cause?') and then answer him per point. Numbers encrusted in Mr. Mohamed A. Awale's article refer to my points of comment.

Does Dr. Megalommatis's Convoluted Argument Helps or Hurts Somali Cause?

by Mohamed A. Awale

Recall the strange scenes of the Doctor Dolittle move by Eddy Murphy, the comedian actor, where he was depicted as being half-crazed, renowned vet doctor who could speak a wide array of animal languages. For some strange reasons, the character became so much pro-occupied with the welfare of his pets at the clinic to the point in which he gave up all other routine and rational human activities, much less about the devotion of his family life. At some point, he started hearing voices and acquired paranormal instinct to communicate with his subjects so much so that when he comes to the lab every morning he could easily talk with the animals and field their complains (dogs, birds, serpents, etc.) of which animal did what the night before or who needs what among: e.g., about minor scuffles and sleep spoilers or demand for food, water, entertainment, medical regiments and so on. 1

To the point, I'm referring to the pen name of Dr. Mohammed Megalommatis, an unmistakably compulsive writer and somewhat cyber-pugilist and combative character (might this comment bring down on me the verbal onslaught of the doctor soon?) 2

Anyone who occasionally gets in his main playgrounds such as American Chronicle web pages rarely could miss his relatively well-composed but at times piercing and acerbic tongue of political commentary on the Horn. 3 I'm in the view that there are many good (at least it used to be) points in his writings. As someone who traces his backgrounds to the area, I was taken aback by his insightful comments about Ethiopian dominant linguistic and ethno-religious issues and their past roles as an instrument of socio-political depravity and oppression. He was also right about exposing the supremacist features and unjustified past exploitation inflicted by successive Ethiopian rulers from highlander ethnic groups on other nationalities.

His detest for the current Ethiopian illegal occupation in Somalia was also used to be another congenial subject for many people, but that is where it ends as far as topicality of mutual interest is concerned. 4

Lately, the Doctor waded into less glamorous territory, if not unethical, as he is perhaps trying hard to get some insights on the "mud-still theory" and deceptive inner-working of Somalia's political feuds and there by inadvertently dragging in his feet with other trivial 5 topics including the role of S/land on the matter. He even 6 made unflattering remarks about the wife of S/land's president for no apparent reason 7 (http://www.americanchronile.com/articles/66074) calling disparaging names 8 and titles even though she has no known power or saying 9 in the government affairs.

The million dollar question is then why the busy Dr. drifted away from the usual mantra and started taking pot-shots at every moving object in S/land scene? Why now this issue and never before? 10 Or who are the sources behind of all these manufactured and less than gentlemanly material that muddied his hectic work? 11 I'm not too sure yet, except to say that only the doctor himself could shed some light on what is failing him and who is feeding what garbage and the motives behind it.

But I can gather from his comments some lame accusations against S/land with respect to the political misfortune of the South Somalia. Rest assured the government of SL and populace has never felt schadenfraude about the misery of the southern counterparts. 12 The mess and prolonged predicament of the South is primary self-inflicted wounds and people of the north had little say on the matters for long time. 13

Definitely, haphazard comments like "Tyrant of the Red Sea" and "Republic of Huda Berakat" are primarily side-kick and non sequitur line of arguments. They are worth of nothing except eyesore as far as substance goes.14 On the other hand, I'm curios why the Doctor is so reluctant to mention in his daily dosage other notorious characters, who are still championing for the destruction and chaos scenes of Somalia. There are plenty and he is well versed with that. 15 It keeps me wondering what's failing the doctor and his gospel nowadays. Look no further what he offers in his latest twisted logic (http://americanchronicle.com/articles/67695). The phantasmagoric message in between the lines, as the title imply, goes like: any chaotic environ of ( i.e. instance S/Land or P/land) will have beneficial spin to the intractable chaotic situation of Somalia. It is something akin to a burning house except few rooms and one tells you let the nature take its course instead of trying to save what is left. 16

And one more caveat for anyone who is aspiring to become an objective pundit on Somali political talk-shop is that most Somalis are notoriously dishonest when it comes in inter-clan political interest and therefore unreliable as a credible source. 17 Asked by foreigner about his/her view, Somali will twist every historical fact in favour of his lineage and against others at any length: perpetrator will play victimhood card while at same claiming to be the invincible and undisputed majority; thieve will invoke sainthood and accuse the perceived rival to the vice versa; will beat the bush about purported superiority or material wealth of his group and contrast it with others as a mere beggars; invoke all the noble character and grandiose intentions while relegating others into the cast role. 18

It is all about deliberate tug-of -war to extract maximum sympathy from strangers in order to get some edge on the fierce intra-group competition on the ground. 19 That is why Somali conflict of the south is protracted over 17 years and no solution in sight, 20 that is why some benevolent actors around the world couldn't figure out the root cause 21 and that is the reason, to some degree, Somali territory was divided into five parts by the colonials. 22

But let us assume he might as well be, with sheer naiveté, unwittingly mislead by flatterers and people with extremely nefarious agenda about Somalia's political future. 23 In that case, why the good professor shouldn't take few comment sense precaution, not withstanding with ethics of scholarly standards, including (1) cross-reference and double checking his source's credibility, biases, political motivations or otherwise (2) do practical research work - - googling things are easy but it can never be substitute for or as much reliable as other physical work (3) paying attention to the feedback materials from critics and different points of views which he could gain immense knowledge from (4) desist from personal attacks and mudslinging with critics. If reaction of someone seems unwarranted why not just ignore it altogether (5) admit and correct if mistake happen for one reason or another (6) refrain from corrupting and taking out of context other people's work (7) refine hard-hitting titles and offensive language. 24 Again a common sense dictates the role and the type of lingo one uses in a given audience to the get message across. Why bring out sledge hammer while the same task could be done with needle? 25

Dr. Megalomattis has every right to express his opinion and take whatever position he likes. However, does the good doctor care about the reputation and objectivity of his trade anymore? 26 How about offending so often fans and detractors alike? Is the charming and do-gooder old doctor morphed irreversibly into 'Doctor Do-little' - the one possessed by the supernatural world and hears whispers of invisible voices?

My moribund curiosity kept me following his material for a while. After I heard that some irate Ethiopian nationals in N. America were attempting to silence past few months for good under the pretext of hate speech, I fired an e-mail to the said website in support of him and the readership. Now I doubt about the whole effort and probably I'm not alone. 27

Commentary

1. I doubt whether American cinematography and TV serials are relevant of the African Muslim culture of the average Somalis. Certainly, I am not a Somali, and I have been only briefly in parts of Greater Somalia. I have however encountered Somalis in many countries, and more particularly in Egypt where I have resided over the past seven (7) years. I don't think that Eddy Murphy is relevant of anything related to Somali, African or Muslim culture, and I don't find the need for westernizing African and Asiatic peoples precisely at a moment when more and more questions about the validity and/or the deviation of the European and American cultures are raised. With respect to any civilization, I have a tendency to turn to its classics; has Mr. Awale, so comfortable with the Western world, forgotten Jean de la Lafontaine, Jean de la Bruyere or Ivan Krylov?

2. This reference is comical, and this is the least I can say; the poorly worded sentence reveals Mr. Awale's inconsistence or back thoughts. In fact, when you describe attitudes, you refer to a person. So, he does not refer to “the pen name”. The pen name has no personal qualifications; furthermore, Muhammad (not Mohammed) Shamsaddin Megalommatis are my names and surname, not my “pen name”. Why this contradiction? Probably, Mr.Awale had in front of himself some printouts of libels written against me by racist Amhara insulters or Rayale's miserable employees, and starting with great speed, he copied the expression. By the way, I totally denounce his approach and interpretation; I am not pugilist and combative. I may occasionally expose and categorically denounce the evildoings of various tyrants, and the criminal historical forgery complied by the Amhara debteraw, the masters of the anti-African indoctrination of their own people, but in most of my texts I analyze historical and philological topics. Where is my presumed pugilist character in articles like the following:
http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/62341 or http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/64459? Nowhere!

3. 'At times piercing and acerbic tongue'; even if I accepted the adjectives used, I would still wonder why the character or the type of less than 15% of my articles is a matter of concern for Mr. Awale. Has he any particular interest in keeping the targets of my attacks immune of any criticism? What does he truly want to say? Does my eventually acerbic tongue matter more (for Mr. Awale) than the criminal deeds of those whom I accuse? Why can't he just refute the arguments I present, which truly demand and absolutely justify the use of my eventually acerbic tongue against the criminals involved? Or shall we go back to the moral anesthesia of the West where everything becomes 'relative' up to the point that even Pope Benedict XVI felt the need to denounce the prevailing inhuman relativism?

4. Mr. Awale omitted or never read a wide range of articles I published on other subjects, namely Kosova, Macedonia, Turkey, Transdniester, Russia, Iran, Baluchistan, Pakistan, the Kurds, Iraq, the Aramaeans, Turkey, Syria, Israel, Yemen, Algeria, Sudan, Scotland, Europe, America, etc. He thus over-magnifies within the circumference of my own interests and publications – the section he was most attracted to read; but this is a self-made illusion.

5. This approach is self-contradictory, and consists in sheer maximization of the moment; it cannot possibly lead to any correct conclusion. Last summer, due to the Turkish elections, I was rather focused on Turkey; numerous Oromo readers were then writing to me anxiously to ask me why I had 'forgotten' them! But this year I wrote only a few articles about Turkey – thus far. I would rather suggest any good will reader to avoid concluding anything in this regard. As a matter of fact, over the past three or four years, I did not write anything about a great number of subjects that I have studied and explored perfectly well, and about which I published much in my pre-Internet period of publications. Suddenly, I can start writing about Iran 3 articles per day and for 6 consecutive months; what would this mean? Personal attraction and decision to meet demands. What cannot be easily detected through my articles by a third person is the correspondence I receive and the demands of my readers, which is something I value greatly. Many write to me only to ask me to write about a subject; I feel a moral obligation toward them.

The self-contradiction is due to the fact that if some topics are 'trivial', it is certainly impossible for them to be an 'unethical territory'; issues of morality and ethics concern important issues. Petty things are out of the dilemma of a moral or immoral choice.

6. Eh, now, Mr. Awale made me truly laugh at him. The use of the word 'even' necessitates a disproportional exaggeration; f.i. 'he even blasphemed God'. But how can it be used for the case of my writings about trivial topics (as he said just in the previous sentence)? With strong Usage and correct Stylistics, you understand easily that a sentence like “he even called the serial killer immoral and sinner” makes no sense, and the use of 'even' is totally wrong.

Another revelation takes place here; Mr. Awale admits that Huda Barkhad, Rayale's wife, is a matter of triviality! In the previous sentence, Mr. Awale said that recently I have been writing about trivial subjects regarding Somaliland. And in this sentence, further advancing his argumentation, he says that I write about Huda Barkhad (http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/64747). So, he automatically implies that she is trivial.

7. 'For no apparent reason'! Really? The entire article on Huda Barkhad Republic contains lengthy details about illegal deeds, corruption, nepotism, favoritism and fraud perpetrated within the environment of Huda Barkhad. The article in almost its entirety consists in the re-publication of an editorial published in Haatuf in Somaliland itself! The publisher Yusuf Gabobe was immediately arrested after the publication, and all this still means for Mr. Awale 'no apparent reason' for an article! Holy s.it!

8. Am I truly calling “disparaging names”? This is incredible! Mr. Awale did not probably read anything of my article or he tries to show that he does not understand. Huda Barkhad committed crimes against the people of Somalia; she is still living in non permissible luxury when people around her are starving, being deprived of basics. Her corrupt practices are a disgrace, and you suggest that I used “disparaging names” for the enormous cetaceous that weighs over 300 kilos? I said nothing for this kitschy Barkhad woman that unfortunately you cannot hide.

In a telephone call from Hargeisa, a friend informed me actually that, for the average Hargeisa guy, Huda Barkhad is awfully audible on two frequent occasions, namely when insulting her president and husband (vulgar vernacular and incredible insults are heard in the nearby streets), and when eating (the ensuing burping is enough to make sleeping babies wakeup in Hargeisa's most excruciating nightmare). Do you think you will be able to hide her for long? She will soon become the top Red Sea comics!

9. In addition, the unconstitutional use of political power by Huda Barkhad should not take you by surprise; everything is lawless there, the president is illegitimate, as his tenure ended and the elections have been canceled, and the country is illegal, and simply does not exist for the UN. It's true that the local pseudo-constitution offers no role for the first ….. “lady”!!!

But Huda, Hargeisa's whale, as they all call her, managed to create a vast 'empire' due to her grip over her pale and unassuming husband. After the vast, interminable gossiping about Mohammed Egal's masculinity, Northern Somalis have got the chance of gossiping about a most embarrassing 'presidential' wife.

10. I almost answered this point earlier; there are plenty of issues about which I have not yet publsihed anything (at least in my second, Internet-based, period of publications); there should not be any surprise if tomorrow I start writing about Saudi Arabia (to which I have not dedicated a single title thus far). There is, as I said, attraction to a subject, and demand from people. In fact, I had written in the past (2005) four articles of historical contents and by then I was still rather favorable to Somaliland. When I gathered full proof of Somaliland's foreign policy being indexed to that of Abyssinia, I wrote an initial article last year. Then, I noticed the reactions; many Somalis engulfed in Somaliland wrote to thank me for that. Some opposed my ideas and interpretations. I carefully noticed their style. Some things are very clear; when the style of a rejection is vulgar, this means that your criticism was correct and actually hit the target. As the style of reaction among those who opposed my approach varied, I studied it better and drew my conclusions. And I believe that with more articles in the future I will be in a position to better clarify my position as regards the unfortunate existence of the pseudo-entity Somaliland in the northern provinces of Somalia.

11. I noticed that, among those who politely opposed my position as regards Somaliland, there were several who believed that I have been the mysterious victim of a plot; they imagined – like Mr. Awale – that some of the opponents of the Somaliland regime managed to contact me first and in a way influence my opinion. This is an aberration. It demonstrates perfectly well that they do not understand me at all.

I have always formed all my decisions and my positions, based on principles, ideals, and a moral consideration – perception of the world.

I need nobody to talk to me about Somaliland; come critical facts speak indeed by themselves. I explained – perhaps not completely – the reasons of my rejection of Somaliland here: http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/62564. The article may be brief, but essential. My refutation of Ahmed Ali Sabeyse's article highlights further viewpoints on the subject: http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/57815, http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/58054, http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/58173,
http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/58297, and
http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/58344.

12. This sentence oscillates between the fallacy and the ludicrousness. The government of Somaliland and the Somalis, who have been held captives by the tyrannical administration of Somaliland in Somalia's northern territory do not form a unity, and their viewpoints diverge dramatically. The outright majority of the people certainly want peace to prevail allover Somalia, and unity to be established. The gangsters in the government and their few supporters rejoice for the troubles of the Somali South, being at the same time comically oblivious of the terrible situation that surrounds them, because they don't want to admit that, in either Hargeisa's or Mogadishu's streets, it is equally unsafe for anyone to walk. The guys around Rayale know very well that peace will prevail in the south, whereas for peace to come to the North, they have to be eliminated. They know very well that nothing will be left of them and that the Isaaqs and all the other Somalis will remember Somaliland as a filthy name of colonial past and fratricide division.

13. You see, this is the problem, not Somaliland's declaration of independence in itself. As I have repeatedly said, it is only normal to see a peaceful part of a country that has fallen in fratricidal war to set boundaries, (s)elect a government, organize an administrative substructure apart from the rest, until they all pacify and come to terms on how to cohabitate in political diversity. The problem is that the renegades – the current authorities of Somaliland –, having got instructions from the evil, anti-Somali, racist Amhara and Tigray Monophysitic Abyssinians, did act like this (which would be logical and original), but they intended to bring about the definite division and destruction of Somalia, thus materializing the Abyssinian policy's top target. The presence of a criminal 'diplomatic' Abyssinian establishment in Hargeisa highlights the point. The status of the Abyssinian pseudo-embassy, their attitude and behaviour, the illegal and anti-Somali relationship between Abyssinia and Somaliland, the ominous and inhuman practice of extradition of Ogadeni and Oromo refugees from Somaliland to Abyssinia, everything testifies to the perpetration of the worst form of High Treason that has ever taken place on African soil.

It would be totally different if Somaliland tried to enter into consultations and negotiations with the conflicting parts of the East and the South, if Somaliland deployed efforts to pacify and bring them all together, if Somaliland supported the persecuted Ogadenis, and closed the door of Berbera to the execrable, racist face of the Amhara and Tigray terrorists.

14. Instead of just reproaching to me 'name calling', why does Mr. Awale not try to explain the reasons for which – according to his idea – Rayale is not the “Red Sea tyrant”? The answer is simple; he cannot prove that Rayale is not a tyrant, and he therefore avoids any answer, keeping himself at low rhetoric level, deprived of argument. Quite contrarily, every time I characterize someone for his / her deeds, I offer full explanation. This is called dialogue, demonstration and argumentation. This is what the foolish, uneducated, paranoid and hysterically racist Amhara and Tigray elites around Meles Zenawi are not apt to. However, this characteristic was never in the past a typical trait of the Somali culture. In the long run, one can notice a certain contamination, namely the diffusion of the Abyssinian Monophysitic aberration and paranoid thought among the ruling gang of Hargeisa.

For one more time, Mr. Awale is proven unable to demonstrate why the aforementioned article of mine is empty of substance; if his mind has ceased to work, it is our duty to point it out to him. He has to analyze sentence by sentence and point by point in order to demonstrate that it is “worth of nothing except eyesore as far as substance goes”. Otherwise, his words do not refute my article, and they consist in a simple idiocy, like that of all the trashy apologists of charlatan Rayale and his voluminous whale Huda, the monster of Hargeisa.

15. If Mr. Awale wants me to speak of “other notorious characters, who are still championing for the destruction and chaos scenes of Somalia”, he must just wait. There are many, as he correctly says, and I intend to focus on several leading paradigms. It is a matter of time.

16. What Mr. Awale's partial mind does not allow him to see is that following various critical developments, and as the recent events demonstrate, there is nothing to be saved in Somaliland; Rayale spread fire throughout the territory where he is not accepted even in his own place. So criminally subservient to the historical enemy, Abyssinia, the governments of Somaliland have been that not the slightest trace of legitimacy and popularity has been left to them.

17. At this point, Mr. Awale enters into the sphere of extremism. To better support his argument, he disqualifies his fellow country men. The attempt has certainly a positive aspect, as it shows national self-confidence (courage in pointing out disadvantages without fear), but its overstressing negative attitude drastically reduces Mr. Awale's power of persuasion.

18. I would rather like to see Mr. Awale's description of the average attitude of the Amhara and Tigray Monophysitic Abyssinians, and his criticism of them; it would help me better understand his approach. As I would be pleased to continue my debate with him, I look forward to reading his points on the Abyssinians.

19. Here, we reach the level of science fiction!

20. And because of this reason, the exclusive attribution of the Somali Civil War to Somalis' eventual negative attitudes and mentality is absolutely wrong. The existence of foreign plans, either those of the Amhara and Tigray Monophysitic Abyssinians or the English colonial targets in Eastern Africa, is the basic reason. More: http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/40279 (latest of a series of 9 articles), http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/41538, and http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/25568.

21. Ignoring ages old plans of European colonial powers does not allow anyone to get a deep and accurate understanding of the Somali crisis.

22. Wrong; even before the arrival of the colonial powers in the last decades of the 19th century, Somalia was divided into many sultanates. But this was not a problem. Division is not always disastrous; it mostly is, if there are foreign plans that trigger division in order to exploit the natural resources and the indigenous people or – even worse – to cause a terrible national disaster.

23. The same comical narrative ('unknown' but 'nefarious'!!!) about some imaginative Somalis trying to confuse my perception of the Somali Cause is repeated here - atrociously.

24. What is the point of suggesting to an academic to make something (adequate investigation and research) that he has long been familiar with? Useless; it goes without saying that an academic proceeds similarly. Apart from that, I can certainly admit and correct a mistake (as long as I am the one who made the mistake, not the author of a text that I republish); and I don't think that I ever altered or corrupted a text that I republished or quoted. But Mr. Awale must not misunderstand me. Sometimes I republish a severe criticism of Somaliland's government written by a Somali who still has a positive view of Somaliland. I don't change or alter the text. Through this, I simply demonstrate how down-to-earth reality turned even those persons' dreams into a nightmare in Somaliland. Their criticism matters for me and my readership; their dreams – to which they are fully entitled – matter not.

Finally, Mr. Awale unveils what hurts him most: 'offensive' language. But there is no offensive language that would possibly match the execrable existence of a high traitor who betrays his illustrious country in order to serve the purposes of the barbaric and uncivilized historical enemy. All the negative words of all the languages are not enough!

25. Throughout his eloquent discourse, Mr. Awale forgot a very important parameter that – I must admit it – does not necessarily concern him. However, it does concern me! It is my readership, I men the part of my readership I care most about. These are all the tyrannized and terrorized people of Eastern Africa who love to see someone share their Cause for Justice, National Independence and Ultimate Victory over the evil forces of Hatred and Tyranny that prevailed for too long. I write for them, intending to help them better know their Noble (and miserably altered by the racist elites of Abyssinia) History, and to denounce those who harmed them, their lives, their families and friends. Mr. Awale must truly seize this point. Of course, I also write in order to inform a Chinese, an Indian, a Russian, an American and a Brazilian; but they are not – at least for my articles about the Horn of Africa and Eastern Africa in general – my main target readership. For every 100 mails sent to me by Oromos I get one mail from a Chinese; this says it all.

26. This point has been made clear by what I have just said above. For every article topic, my target readership is different. In general, I can say this: people who did not suffer are not of great importance for me. I don't disregard them, of course not. But a conformist and conventionalist relativist, who enjoys the consumerism and the materialism of the Western world, is frozenly indifferent for me.

27. I thank Mr. Awale for his kindness; we share the same ideal of freedom of speech. I always supported freedom of speech for all people, and I never regretted. Even when the worst enemies of freedom are offered this opportunity, it is not a gift offered to them that they could eventually turn against us. Freedom of speech accepted for the enemies of Freedom simple helps them uncover themselves and spectacularly show their venomous and inhuman faces and hearts. That's why we know them better, and we identify them unmistakably.
