More than ever, scientific research is proving the primary role of stress in triggering or aggravating various physical and emotional afflictions. A headline in a 1983 issue of Time Magazine described stress as "The Epidemic of the Eighties." The article also said that stress is a critical health problem. Indeed one has to acknowledge that the world has become even more complicated and stressful over the last twenty-five years since that article was written.

A lot of surveys show that most adults are under the impression of being under a lot of stress. Authorities in this domain estimate that around 75 to 90 percent of the visits to primary care doctors are for stress related issues.

Most adults say their stress is mainly due to their job. Stress levels have also grown in children as well as the elderly population for reasons including: Peer pressures that often push people to everything from smoking to alcoholism and drug abuse; the loss of religion and family values; growing crime rates; fear for personal security; but also social isolation and loneliness.

Stress is a factor of conditions such as diabetes, ulcers, low back and neck pain, hypertension, strokes and heart attacks. This is due to the ever growing sympathetic nervous system activity and a high level of cortisol, adrenaline, and other hormones. Chronic stress is co-morbid with weakened immune system resistance. Stress can cause anxiety, depression, and its numerous impacts on the body's organs.

The following definition for "stress" can be found in the American Heritage Dictionary:
"To subject to physical or mental pressure, tension, or strain"

The following is the definition of "tension" from the same dictionary:
"Mental, emotional, or nervous strain"

The word "anxiety" is defined as follows:
"A state of uneasiness and apprehension, as about future uncertainties"

And the word "depression" is defined as follows:
"The condition of feeling sad or despondent"

It defines "clinical depression" as follows:
"A psychiatric disorder characterized by an inability to concentrate, insomnia, loss of appetite, anhedonia, feelings of extreme sadness, guilt, helplessness and hopelessness, and thoughts of death."

We can nonetheless be sure that our mind is the major cause of our feelings of stress, anxiety and depression. In other words, what we think about, and our attitudes and points of view about our experiences create what we feel. That way, if we can discover how to alter our thoughts, attitudes, and points of view, we can release our stress, anxiety, and depression and change them for a better state of being.

People have always sought out methods that would allow them to eliminate stress. The pharmaceutical industry seems to have a pill for everything. For that the industry has produced a wide line of tranquilizers from Valium to Xanax. If you choose to use drugs for relief, please make sure that you read the fine print and learn about the side effects, which most of the time are, among others, addiction and dependency. Indeed these sorts of drugs try to treat the symptoms, instead of the cause. So if one stops taking them, the symptoms can return.

A more intelligent way of getting rid of tension, stress, anxiety, and depression is to work on its actual cause, which as I wrote previously, is usually our thought processes. There is some good news. The very essence of hypnosis is relaxation. The AMA accepted hypnosis in 1958 as an effective method of treating stress or stress related symptoms. And unlike anxiolytics, there are no undesirable side effects. a

Hypnosis is the Alpha level of consciousness. It's the daydream like temporary psychological state that we go through as we're just about to fall asleep in the evening. And we go through it another time as we awaken again. There are a lot of different ways that we can guide ourselves into this relaxed mood, from step-by-step relaxation to visual imagery to listening to hypnosis CD's.

Once we are in the hypnotic state, we are able to interact with our unconscious mind, which is the center of our emotions. And one can more easily accept new ideas and points of view which will help us to dissipate anxiety, or even avoid it completely.

NLP, which is a recently developed sort of hypnosis, offers numerous great techniques for dissipating stress. Maybe the most effective technique is called the "swish" pattern - or the "flash" pattern. After using this technique, your unconscious will automatically use bad, stress producing mental pictures, as triggers for relaxing mental pictures. Otherwise stated, your stressors will automatically make you feel more relaxed!

TO SUM UP: Our thoughts can prompt depression, anxiety and tension. So if we change our attitude and the way we resent our situation and our experiences, we can dissipate these feelings at the source. Hypnosis and NLP are natural tools that make it possible to change our attitude and point of view to swiftly dissipate the main cause of our negative feelings.
