Aloe Vera - An Adaptogenic and a Tonic

Aloe Vera Barbadensis is known for its adaptogenic properties. An adaptogenic is a substance, in this case a herb, that possesses the power to help increase the body`s resistance to anxiety, stress, fatigue, and also trauma yet avoiding interference in the biological process of an organisms.

Before the word "adaptogen" was even heard of, ancient herbalists referred to Aloe as a tonic. Never-the-less, the point being made, is that this herb has "adaptogenic” qualities, that creates a huge rift between the results from using the herb with the negative results of using drugs.

The pathway that many pharmaceuticals take to relieve symptoms caused by stress and trauma, is often by stimulation or blockage of cell receptors. It does it`s job effectively but the results are short lived. The symptoms caused by the stress return, while the interference by the drug triggers a malfunction that reeks havoc elsewhere.

Can Aloe Vera really help the body adapt to modern stresses? The answer to that question is yes, whether they are external or internal. Most can weaken the immune system to a high degree triggering inflammatory responses. We are dealing with mineral deficiencies, chemical exposure, stress, acidic diets, smoking, and not forgetting pharmaceuticals. These are only a few of them that come to mind.

For example, chemical exposure is increasing as new formulas make their way onto the market. We are not naive to the effects of breathing in polluted air, and the consequences that result over an extended period. Yet there is another danger lurking almost undetected in our very homes. When we rise in the morning and take a shower, we expose our skin to the toxic chemicals bottled in our shampoos and shower gels. They are present in our creams and perfumes, the dish washing and clothes detergents we use.

They easily enter into the bloodstream under a hot shower or by breathing them in, causing inflammation of the cardiovascular system, while weakening our immune systems, and putting strain on our lymph system. The kidneys can be affected as they strain to keep the system clean, leading to the development of high blood pressure and other serious problems. Aloe Vera as an adaptogenic, can support the body`s resistance against these effects, lowering blood pressure, controlling blood sugar, and as a natural anti-inflammatory, calming the immune system`s response.

Don’t be mistaken! I am not saying that Aloe Vera is a fix-it agent that can compensate for a bad lifestyle. The real solution is to take the bull by the horns and change our lifestyles. But while we are getting around to doing that, Aloe Vera is a tonic, an "adaptogenic", an immune stimulant that can help our bodies ward of the damaging effects of stress, helping the healing process. The gel from the leaf has been recognised as a safe food that can be taken in reasonable doses. If doses are excessive, the worse that can happen is stomach cramps and diarrhea.

The adaptogenic Aloe Vera is a time tested powerful herb, both ancient and modern.
